Project Search
Our students have the opportunity to apply for Project SEARCH while attending Chisholm Life Skills Center. If selected, the goal for each program participant is competitive employment. To reach that goal, the program provides real-life work experience combined with training in employability and independent-living skills to help young people with significant disabilities make successful transitions to productive adult life.
Community Based Instruction
Community-based instruction (CBI) is an instructional strategy that helps students develop skills for independent living in their natural community environment. CBI is an evidence-based practice that's used to prepare students with disabilities for their lives after school.
CBI Students can develop skills in four domains:
- Domestic: Self-management in daily life
- Vocational: School jobs and paid/unpaid work experiences
- Recreational: Extracurricular activities and physical fitness
- Community: Access to community resources such as shopping, safety, and services

STUCO (Student Council)
We have a fantastic leader for our Student Council at Chisholm Life Skills Center. Ms Amanda, the Mentor for STUCO at CLSC, told me that student council is elected to represent our school! She was asked to lead STUCO four years ago during her first year with us (2021-2022).
She said that the goal of STUCO is to have our students take control in planning/leading events for their peers, developing ideas to help their peers in our building, and taking on leadership roles!
Student Council consists of 8 roles: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Activities Coordinator, Social Director, Safety Officer, and Student Ambassador.
The events that our STUCO plans and helps plan include Grandparents Day, where STUCO members direct grandparents to their student, the Turkey Drive, where STUCO members collect/count items to present in the parade for the district, develop and participat in Spirit Weeks by coming to school dressed up, hand out flyers and pass out stickers for those who participate, decorated and set up for events like the Talent Show and Homecoming, and they meet monthly to discuss community resources. They then they then make a poster about it to promote independence within our school. Some of the community resources we have looked at include the Wichita Police Department, medical care facilities, libraries, safe places in the city, and the Division of Motor Vehicles.
